EASTERN CAPE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT
 SPEECH BY MEC GODONGWANA
AT THE OPENING OF THE PROVINCIAL ECONOMIC SUMMIT FOR WOMEN
IN EAST LONDON,
 28 MAY 2001

Wathinta abafazi, wathinta imbokotho

Women have played a major role in changing the lives of the South Africans. However, we are still faced with the challenge that women need
to take a lead in the economy.Summits of this nature should set time frames for resolutions taken and put a mechanism in place to see that
progress was made within set deadlines.

As you are coming from various corners of the province, you are better placed to engage us in areas of economic upliftment. The government
has also gone a long way in recognising the role that must be played by women,as a result institutional arrangements that include the
Office of the Status of Women.

The MEC said the provincial government was looking at changing the provincial tender procudure and asked the summit delegates to give their
input as bureaucrats only looked at the process from an administrative efficiency point of view.

He admitted that that his own department was legging behind in gender equality. In this case, he has instructed senior department officials
to make sure that the among the few directorship positions currently available, at least one must go to a woman. He argued that all the top
management of the Eastern Cape Development Corporation were men, something that has to be rectified as soon as possible.
